Couples Therapy
The process of relationships can be a sacred path. Far from being an obstacle to our personal and spiritual development, relationships can be a catalyst for discovering our true essence. Couples therapy can assist on this journey.
The process of being in a relationship can be a way of accelerating our growth and can be a powerful spiritual journey of awakening. Walking the path of relationship deepens the soul's capacity for compassion, the heart's capacity for embracing love, and helps us to understand love's cycles of giving and receiving. The closer we come to another, the better we come to know ourselves
Couples Therapy uses a variety of therapeutic and creative interventions, which can help couples, develop the tools for a successful relationship.
We are encouraged to hold certain beliefs about relationships imagining that we should be able to establish a rich and satisfying relationship with someone we love even if we have never learned to relate to ourselves in a loving and satisfying way. We are encouraged to believe that a successful relationship largely depends on finding the right person and doing the right things. Often not seeing that how we relate to another is an expression of how we relate to ourselves, that our outer relationships are a reflection of our inner life, we can only be as open and present with another as we are with ourselves. |
Couples therapy focuses on the problems existing in the relationship between two people.
These relationship problems always involve individual symptoms and problems, as well as relationship conflicts. Relationship therapy will help you and your partner identify the issues of conflict within your relationship, and help you decide what changes are needed, in the relationship and in the behaviour of each partner, for both of you to feel satisfied with the relationship.
Couples therapy may be short term. You may need only a few sessions to help you manage a crisis. Or you may need couples therapy for several months, or longer, particularly if your relationship has greatly deteriorated. As with individual psychotherapy, you typically see a therapist once a week.
Illness, infidelity, sex, anger, communication problems — can all contribute to distress in relationships. Marriage counselling or couples counselling can help resolve conflicts and heal wounds.
Couples therapy is different from individual psychotherapy or counselling because the relationship is the focus of attention, instead of one individual.
Accepting that a problem has developed within a relationship is the first step to overcoming it by seeking professional help.
Most couples tend to come for therapy as a last resort, often leaving it too long before arriving that at least one of the partners is past caring. So, do seriously consider therapy in time to do some good, especially if:
- One of you is very insecure, clingy or jealous and this is ruining the relationship;
- You're both moody with each other most of the time;
- One or both of you can't discuss feelings with the other;
- Discussions always turn into rows;
- One or other of you is unhappy much of the time;
- You have stopped having sex.
